What Flare is
Flare introduces people at the same event. It ranks fit from the answers people give, shows a shared light on both phones, and helps them find each other in the room. It has no photos, no chat and no accounts for guests. Flare is new, and features may change, stop working or be removed. It’s free for guests. Hosts can choose a free rehearsal or a paid event size. Flare is operated by Colin Gillingham (“we”, “us”).
Who can use it
- You must be 18 or older. Events may require a stronger age check, and venues may check ID.
- You must be allowed to use Flare under the laws where you live, and not have been removed from Flare before.
- Hosts must be authorized to run the event they create.
No tolerance for abuse
Flare only works if people feel safe to say yes and to say no. We have no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behavior. You agree to:
- Treat the people you meet with respect, and accept a “Not this time” without asking why.
- Give honest answers, and use only your own phone.
- Not write anything hateful, sexual, threatening, harassing or illegal in any answer or event name.
- Not harass, threaten, stalk, follow or pressure anyone, inside or outside the event.
- Not use Flare to find someone who has cleared a match with you or blocked you.
- Not join an event you aren’t physically at, share or resell join codes outside the venue, or use bots, emulators or modified apps.
- Not try to influence matching by putting instructions in your answers, scrape other people’s answers, overload the service or get around its limits.
- Not use Flare for commercial solicitation, sex work or anything illegal.
Safety is shared
Flare doesn’t verify identities, run background checks or screen guests, and can’t promise how anyone will behave. Use your judgment, stay in the venue’s public spaces, and use clear, block and report whenever something feels wrong. Read the safety guide. If you’re in danger, contact venue staff or local emergency services first.
Reports, removal and blocks
- A report goes to the event’s host and to us. Someone with two or more open reports in an event is paused from matching until the host acts.
- Hosts can remove a participant from their event. We review reports and messages to safety@downloadflare.app within 24 hours, and we may remove objectionable content and remove or block devices that break these terms, at any event, without notice.
- Text answers are filtered: links, email addresses, phone numbers and handles are removed, and answers are never shown to other guests.
- Blocks you make follow your device across all events.
Hosts
- You’re responsible for your event: its name and description, the venue, age checks where your event or the law requires them, and the safety of your space.
- Handle reports promptly and in good faith, and don’t try to identify guests from the reports queue or the results.
- Show the rotating join code only at the venue, during the event.
- Don’t describe Flare as screening, verifying or guaranteeing the safety of guests.
Purchases
- Hosts can run a free rehearsal for up to 10 participants or buy a one-time event size through Apple. The app shows the localized Apple price before purchase. Templates and customization are included, and there’s no subscription. TestFlight purchases are free during beta testing and don’t carry over to the App Store version.
- A paid size supports the selected total number of distinct guest phones for one event. Rejoining on the same phone doesn’t use another place. Leaving doesn’t free a place for a different phone. You can’t move to a different paid size after buying.
- The purchase pays for digital hosting and matching, not admission to a physical venue.
- Deleting all Flare data removes access to that phone’s hosted events and templates. Apple manages purchases and refunds. If a purchase is refunded, capacity is removed and a live event may be paused.
Matching
Matches are suggestions made by software, partly using AI models. Flare grades how well answers fit, and hosts see totals of those grades (Spark, Glow and Flare). A grade isn’t a promise about a person. Flare decides matches automatically and doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be matched, or with whom.
Your content and ours
Your answers stay yours. You let us use them only to run matching during the event, as the privacy policy describes. The Flare name, wordmark, app and website are ours. The fonts are used under the SIL Open Font License.
Apple
These terms apply when you download Flare from Apple’s App Store or through TestFlight:
- Who you’re agreeing with. These terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for Flare and its content.
- License. We give you a limited, non-transferable license to use Flare on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as allowed by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
- Support. We’re solely responsible for maintenance and support, described on our support page. Apple has no obligation to provide any.
- Warranty. If Flare fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any. To the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Flare.
- Claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for any claims about Flare or your use of it, including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, and consumer protection or privacy claims.
- Intellectual property. If a third party claims Flare infringes their rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending and settling that claim.
- Legal compliance. You confirm that you aren’t in a country subject to a U.S. government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and aren’t on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Third parties. You must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use Flare, such as your wireless data agreement.
- Beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. When you accept them, Apple has the right to enforce them against you.
Disclaimers and liability
Flare is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We aren’t responsible for the conduct of guests or hosts, or for what happens at events. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim about Flare is limited to US$50. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law, or any rights you have under consumer law that can’t be waived.
Ending
You can stop using Flare at any time and delete your data in the app. We may suspend or end access to Flare for anyone who breaks these terms, or wind the service down.
Changes, law and contact
We may update these terms. We’ll change the date above and tell you in the app before significant changes apply. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict of laws rules, except where the law of the place you live requires otherwise.
