The basics

What is Flare?

Flare is an iPhone app that introduces people at the same event. Guests scan in and answer a few questions, and Flare lights two compatible people’s phones in the same color and rhythm. They follow the light across the room, it holds steady when they’re together, and then the phones go away.

Is it a dating app?

Partly, but only in person. Flare has three kinds of introduction: dating, friends and work. There are no photos, swipes, chats or feeds, and it only works at a live event. You can’t browse anyone, and nobody can find you from home.

Can I use it without an event?

You can try the demo any time to see how the light behaves. Real introductions only happen at a live event, because they need a code from the host in the room.

Do guests need an iPhone?

Yes, for now. Flare is an iPhone app and needs iOS 18 or later. If much of your crowd uses Android, it isn’t ready for your event yet. Guests on older iPhones without Ultra Wideband can still take part, using Bluetooth to sense closeness.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet. Tell us if that’s what’s stopping you from running an event: hello@downloadflare.app.

What does it cost?

Guests never pay. Hosts pay once per event for its size: up to 10 is free, 15 is $29.99, 50 is $79.99, 100 is $149.99 and 250 is $299.99. There’s no subscription and no per-match fee. Prices are U.S. prices, and Apple shows your local price before you buy.

For organizers

How do I set up an event?

In the app, open the menu, choose Host an event, create a matching template or use Flare’s defaults, then create the event and go live. Here’s the full guide.

Do I need a computer or a website login?

No. Everything runs on your iPhone: templates, events, the code, live controls and results.

Can I write my own questions?

Yes, up to 12 per template. Each can be single choice, multiple choice, a 1 to 5 scale or short text, and you choose how each answer shapes introductions. How to create a template.

How many people can it handle?

Up to 250 guests per event right now. We recommend a small rehearsal first, then an event of 50 to 100, before you fill a bigger room.

Can I see who matched with whom?

No. You see totals: how many joined, how many introductions were offered, how strong they were, and how many led to a meeting. You never see anyone’s answers or who matched with whom.

What do Spark, Glow and Flare mean in my results?

They’re how Flare grades fit from people’s answers: a Spark is compatible, a Glow is strong and a Flare is rare. You see the totals in your results. Guests never see a grade on a match, and it doesn’t predict how a conversation will go.

How are places counted?

Each different phone that joins uses one place, across the whole event. Rejoining on the same phone doesn’t use another. Someone leaving doesn’t free their place for someone new. How to choose a size.

Can I run the same event again?

Yes. Run this event again copies the venue, capacity and exact questions, and proposes the next monthly date. Each event has its own code, results and payment.

What if I lose my phone?

Templates and events are tied to your iPhone’s secure identity, and can’t yet be moved to another phone. If you’re running something important, keep a note of your questions, and share the invitation separately. Email us about an active event.

Do I need Wi-Fi at the venue?

Each guest needs an internet connection, over cellular or Wi-Fi, to join and be matched. If signal is poor, offer guests the venue Wi-Fi.

Can I pause things?

Yes. Pause matching stops new matches for a moment like a speech. It ends active introductions, and guests need to rejoin when matching resumes, so use it sparingly.

What am I responsible for?

Your event, including the venue, its safety, age checks where the law or your event requires them, and responding to reports. Don’t describe Flare as screening, verifying or guaranteeing the safety of guests. It doesn’t do those things. See the terms.

For guests

How do I join an event?

Open Flare at the venue and scan the live code on the event’s screen, or type the six-digit code your host reads out. If you scanned a poster with your camera, the page will tell you how to finish in the app. Step by step.

Why can’t I join from home?

The code changes every five minutes and only works while the event is live. That way, everyone you could be matched with is actually in the room.

Do guests give their names or emails?

No. Guests don’t create accounts. Their phone holds a secure device key that’s used instead. Flare asks for an optional first name in the profile, which stays on the phone and is never sent to our service.

How does Flare decide who to introduce?

In order: first, code applies the rules that can’t bend, like both people being adults, mutual preferences at dating events, and blocks. Next, it shortlists the best candidates for each person using your questions. Then an AI model ranks those shortlists using answers alone, and Flare picks the best pairs across the whole room. More on matching rules.

What if someone doesn’t get matched?

Their light keeps searching. New people arrive and others finish resting, and Flare tries again. In a small room, or for someone with narrow preferences, it may not find anyone, and your welcome should say so. Guests who chose a Good or Strong match can widen their chances by switching to Okay.

Can I choose how good a match has to be?

Yes. While your light is searching, choose Okay, Good or Strong beside Light up for. Each event starts at Okay, and you can change it any time until you’re matched. A match has to reach the higher of the two people’s levels, so lowering yours never gives someone else a weaker match than they asked for. Nobody sees your level.

What happens if I don’t want to meet my match?

Tap Clear, right under the light. Both lights end straight away, and the other person sees “Not this time” with no reason and gets their rest time back. You rest for about two minutes, and the two of you won’t be matched again at this event.

Why do I have to wait between matches?

So you have time to actually talk. By default the rest is 45 minutes for dating, 30 for friends and 15 for work. If you couldn’t find your match, or the match timed out, it’s refunded. If you clear a match, you rest for about two minutes instead.

Do I have to keep the app open?

While you’re looking for someone, keep Flare open. While you’re waiting for a match, you can put your phone away with notifications on, and Flare will tell you when your light finds someone.

Will people spot the light in a dark room?

That’s where it works best. In a bright room, the rhythm and the phone’s vibration do more of the work, and the pulse still quickens as two people get closer. The app also has a Beacon mode that uses full brightness to make the light easier to spot.

Privacy and safety

Does Flare track my location?

No. Flare doesn’t use GPS. Closeness is worked out between the two matched phones over Bluetooth and, where available, Ultra Wideband. That distance never leaves the two phones, and our server never receives a position.

Who can see my answers?

Nobody you meet, and not your host. Answers go to your event’s private room to do the matching. They’re deleted when you leave, when the event ends, or after 12 hours at most. Read the privacy policy.

Can someone find me after the event?

Not through Flare. When the event ends or you leave, the match ends. There’s no message, no profile and no way to look someone up.

How do I block or report someone?

While you’re lit, tap Block or report under the light. A block means you’ll never be matched again at any event. A report also goes to the organizer and to us. How safety works.

How do I delete my data?

In the app, go to Settings and choose Delete everything. Here’s exactly what that removes.

Is Flare for under-18s?

No. Flare is for adults 18 and over, at any kind of event.
